  • 5th REGION SOFTBALL...

LEBANON — Thomas Nelson got an extra night to sleep on its first 5th Region softball tournament appearance in school history thanks to Monday’s storms.

Unfortunately, the Generals’ bats never woke up against standout Marion County pitcher Haley Mattingly after play resumed Tuesday, and the host Knights knocked Thomas Nelson out of the postseason by a 3-0 decision.

  • Weather postpones baseball...

Bardstown and Campbellsville were due to play Monday’s late baseball quarterfinal at John Hardin, but play was suspended to Tuesday before those teams even saw the field. Before the Tigers and Eagles can play, first up is the resumption of Monday’s LaRue County-Elizabethtown quarterfinal. The Hawks held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second in that game.

Those games were set to be restarted Tuesday evening, but an afternoon storm rolled through the area, pushed everything back another day.

  • STRAIGHT ARROW: Bowfishing can...

Deer season has been closed for about four months now, and turkey season has been over for a couple of weeks, so do you just hang up your bow and wait for the next three and a half months for deer season to open again, or find something else to hunt?

I’ll be the first to admit I would much rather hunt deer than fish, but bowfishing is a great way to keep your muscles in shape, and walking along the river or a lake bank probably won’t hurt any of us.

  • BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: Region draws...

Coming in as a district runner-up, Thomas Nelson was bound to face a difficult first-round draw in its first-ever trip to the 5th Region softball tournament, which starts Monday at Marion County.

The Generals (14-9) got just that, as they will take on the host Knights in the last game of the day Monday, at 6 p.m. Marion County (20-6), the 20th District champ, has been among the top teams in the region all year, and has two wins already over Thomas Nelson this season: a 6-0 road victory March 26, and a 13-0 win in Lebanon two weeks ago.

  • 19th DISTRICT SOFTBALL...

SPRINGFIELD — Thomas Nelson’s softball program took a big step up the ladder this season by winning the regular-season district title and qualifying for the district championship game and region tournament for the first time.

The Generals will have to wait another year to climb their next big rung after falling short to host Washington County, 8-3, in Thursday’s 19th District championship at Idle Hour Park.

  • 19th DISTRICT BASEBALL...

SPRINGFIELD — Bardstown fell in a big early hole and was just one swing of the bat away from being run-ruled by host Washington County in Thursday’s 19th District championship.

The Tigers didn’t lie down, putting together a furious six-run, sixth-inning rally that fell short in a 9-7 loss, but Bardstown did gain some confidence going forward as the school makes its second straight region tournament trip next week.

Bardstown coach Glenn Koger said that should help give the Tigers some momentum going into the region tournament.
