  • Youth Sports Roundup 10-17
    Nelson Elite U13 Titans saw action over the weekend.  On Saturday, the Titans tied 2-2 with the Thoroughbreds of Oldham County.  Scoring for the Titans were Daulton Harrison and Camden Miracle. On Sunday, the Titans pulled out a win against CSC of Lexington in the last few seconds of the game with a penalty kick by Carlos Mejia. Reece Sharp’s  offensive pressure was a key to the win and goal keepers, Brendan Wright and Adam Barnes assist with the shutout.    
  • Youth Sports Roundup 10-3
    On Sept. 24, the eighth-grade OKH Lady Wildcats played Bloomfield away, beating the Blazers 39-17. Scorers included Kira Harman with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Morgan Cheatham added 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. Marly Walls pitched in eight points and four steals, and Kyana Hamilton came up with six points and four rebounds, followed by Mya Tardy with four points, five rebounds and four steals. On Thursday, the Lady Wildcats played St. Charles at home, securing the win 47-27.
  • RIVER RAT: Inside the belly of the Bourbon Chase
    With the Bourbon Chase sending a stream of runners through Nelson County all day Friday, and a lighter-than-normal slate of football games that night, I decided to take advantage of an opportunity to get to know the event better, so to speak. The other day, I got on the horn with a good buddy of mine, Damon Barnes, a LaRue County native and Elizabethtown resident who has a lot of family in the New Haven area.
  • Twins have homecoming at Bourbon Chase
    The Bourbon Chase rolls through town today and tomorrow, and for a pair of runners, it’s going to be a homecoming tour. “I’m excited — it’s going to be fun,” said Michelle King. “It’s familiar grounds. I’ve never run there, but I know the area.”
  • Youth Sports Roundup 9-26
    The Nelson County Strikers played the LaRue County Pirates this past weekend, with the game a defensive battle from start to end, finishing in a 1-1 tie. The only goal for the Strikers came from Jordan Hamilton. Next game for the Strikers is Saturday.    The U12 girls’ Nelson County Shockwave picked up a 5-2 win this weekend over Elizabethtown. Casie Metcalf and Paige Dones had a goal apiece, while Lauren Lee accounted for the Shockwave’s other three goals.  
  • RINGSIDE SEAT: Martinez survives Chavez, 12th round
    Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KOs) survived a knockdown in the 12th round of his bout with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) to win by unanimous decision on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev. Martinez, whose style is crowd-pleasing and fun to watch, employed lots of movement and changing angles to frustrate the naturally bigger Chavez, landing punches in bunches and keeping Chavez at bay with his surprising reach advantage.
  • Youth Sports Roundup 9-19
    Youth Soccer The Nelson Co. Elite Titans played a tough game on Saturday against Lexington, LFC, and lost 0-3.  LFC scored the three goals in the last five minutes of the game.  Carlos Mejia and Eli Shewmaker did an outstanding job at defense and Aaron Amshoff also had a great game.  
  • Youth Sports Roundup 9-12
    The Strikers, a U12 girls team, played Larue County Saturday, falling 3-1. The Strikers’ lone goal came from Victoria Riggs. The Strikers next game is Saturday against Elizabethtown.     
  • RINGSIDE SEAT: A night of great fights
    Saturday is gearing up to be one great night of boxing for fans, with no less than four current or former world champions facing off in different venues, with two current champions from different weight classes squaring off for the 168-pound world title.
