    Eva Lee Newton, 84, New Hope, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. She was born Oct. 26, 1923, at Lebanon Junction. She was a former homemaker and member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, New Hope.

    He was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bernard “J.B.” Newton; a son, James Bertrand Newton; two daughters, an infant and Elaine Pierce; and her parents, Joseph Lee Bowman and Catherine Lenora Knopp Bowman.

    Ethel Mae Bryant, 84, Lebanon Junction, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Hardin memorial Hospital, Elizabethtown. She was the former Ethel Mae Jackson, a native of Clermont, a housewife and homemaker and a Catholic by faith.

    She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Hughes.

    Edward Bowman, 84, Shelbyville, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the Masonic Home, Shelbyville. He was born in Nelson County, was a retired farmer, a member of Salem Baptist Church and a member of Shelby County Farm Bureau.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ada Goodlett Bowman; a brother, J.B. Bowman; and a sister, Roberta Downey.

    Vanita A. Jenkins, 86, Lebanon Junction, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. She was the former Vanita A. Brashear, a native of New Albany, Ind. She was a homemaker and housewife, and a member of Belmont Baptist Church, The Women's Missionary Union and the Bullitt County Homemakers.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Jenkins; a son, Michael Jenkins; and a brother, Edward Lee Brashear.

    Survivors include a daughter, Jan Samuels, Lebanon Junction; a granddaughter; a great-grandson.

  • Joseph Louis McGimsey, 66

    Joseph Louis McGimsey, 66, Elizabethtown, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Norton Audubon Hospital, Louisville.

    He was a retired computer supervisor for General Electric, where he had worked for 34 years. He was a member of the Grace Heartland Church.

    Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Belinda Lawson McGimsey; a daughter, Cassandra Dobbs; two sons, Joseph L. McGimsey Jr. and Brian K. McGimsey; seven grandchildren, and two sisters, Ruby Bennett, and VaLinda Hughes.

  • Sanford L. 'Sank' Briggs, 89

    Sanford L. “Sank” Briggs, 89, Bardstown, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Woodland Terrace and Health Care, Elizabethtown. He was a native of Spencer County, an Air Force veteran of World War II, a former partner in Regal Oil Company, Bloomfield, and was company president, member and past master of Bloomfield Masonic Lodge No. 5 F. & A.M. for more than 60 years. He attended First Presbyterian Church of Bardstown.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Harris Briggs; and his parents, Marvin and Annie Donovan Briggs.

    The funeral for Sara Elizabeth Greenwell Smallwood, 78, Louisville, was 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Barlow Funeral Home, with burial in St. Gregory Cemetery. The Rev. John Schwartzlose officiated. Deacon Joe Filiatreau provided the prayer service Wednesday evening and her graveside service at St. Gregory Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were Todd Cissell, Charles Greenwell, Wayne Greenwell, Glenn Cissell, John Greenwell and Mike Greenwell.

    Memorial donations may go to donor’s favorite charity.

    Barlow Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Alvin Crandle McCawley, 77, Shepherdsville, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at his residence. He was a native of Jefferson County, a former employee of the Old Manslick Rock & Stone Company, Louisville.

    Survivors include a niece and three nephews.

    Cremation was chosen. No service or visitation is scheduled.

    She was born April 20, 1915, in Washington County.

    She was a former homemaker and member of Holy Rosary Church in Manton. She enjoyed quilting and gardening.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, John Barton Smith, Jr.; a daughter, Evelyn Marie Smith; a son, Edward Leo Smith; a granddaughter; her parents, Anthony Columbus “Cull” and Anna Catherine Graves Reed; and three brothers, Robert H. Reed, George Edward Reed and Richard Leo Reed.
