St. Catherine Academy in New Haven is gearing up for its annual Portraits of Excellence benefit banquet.

The banquet, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at the St. Catherine Academy Gymnasium, serves not only as a celebration of the school’s longstanding history but also as a fundraiser to help provide a Catholic education experience to others.

“It’s a very important fundraiser for the school,” Fr. Matthew Hardesty said in a message to The Standard. Funds raised help support the academy’s in-house financial aid program. Hardesty said the in-house help, as well as aid from the Catholic Education Foundation, makes a Catholic education possible for any student who wants one.

“It’s within every family’s grasp to send a child to a Catholic school, and the Portraits of Excellence event highlights how exactly we go about that mission,” Hardesty said.

Hardesty said St. Catherine Academy is a ministry of the parish and is supported by parishes in the region. It serves to collaborate with parents in the raising of their children as Catholic, he said.

“The Academy isn’t simply a public school alternative,” he said. “It’s something special. The religion isn’t just an afterthought or one of many classes. It’s part of the whole environment.”

Religion is behind how the academy cares for children and its most important aspect, he said.

“The Catholic identity is at the forefront of who we are and makes us very special,” Hardesty said. “It makes us something for all families to consider.”

The 2019 Portraits of Excellence Benefit Banquet will take place at the school gym, 413 N. First Street in New Haven with cocktails being served at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $55 per person and includes two cocktail tickets. A cash bar will also be available.

Guest speakers for this year’s event include Fr. Scott Wimsett, a pastor with Our Lady of Lourdes in Louisville, and Teresa Morgan, superintendent of Hardin County Schools. Both are New Haven natives and St. Catherine alums.

Call 502-549-3680 by Jan. 22 to purchase tickets to attend this year’s banquet.
