Five people, including two children, were injured Sunday night in a head-on collision on Springfield Road, and one driver is facing DUI charges.

According to a press release from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred at the Washington County line just before 9 p.m.

A 2012 Chevrolet Impala driven by Jose L. Sanchez, 19, of Bardstown, was traveling west on Springfield Road when it crossed the centerline and struck the driver’s side of a utility trailer being towed by William E. Waldschmidt, 69, of Springfield, who was traveling east. Sanchez’s vehicle then struck a 2008 Dodge Nitro, driven by Tamara A. Wilson, 54, of Springfield head on. Wilson’s vehicle had three passengers, including two juveniles.

Sanchez had to be extricated from the vehicle by Nelson County Fire and Rescue, and was transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital by Nelson County EMS, and then later to University Hospital in Louisville for injuries over his entire body.

Wilson was also transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital, along with three passengers — Geraold Wilson, of Springfield, and a 4-year-old girl and 6-year old boy. Both juveniles had injuries to their chests and abdomens.

Tamara Wilson and the 6-year-old boy were later taken to University Hospital in Louisville for their injuries, and both children were later flown to Kosair Children’s Hospital.

Nelson County Sheriff’s deputies were also assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police.

Sanchez is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants.

Seat belts were worn by all adult parties, and the juveniles were in child restraints.

No one in Waldschmidt’s vehicle sustained injuries.
