Kevin Payton has been named the new assistant principal of Bardstown Middle School according to a district announcement released Monday. Payton comes to the city school system from New Haven School, where he had served as principal for the last two years.

In Monday’s announcement, BMS Principal Melissa Taylor said Payton’s experience as a middle school teacher and school administrator would allow him to have an immediate impact at Bardstown Middle.

“Mr. Payton has a great desire to work with middle school students as well as a genuine passion to build relationships with the young people in our community,” Taylor in a press release.

Payton has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in secondary education, earning the bachelor’s from the Indiana University School of Education in 1998 and the master’s from Indiana University Southeast in 2005. He also obtained his Master of Arts in Education/Institutional Leadership in 2011 from the University of the Cumberlands.

Prior to serving as principal with New Haven School, Payton served as its assistant principal for four years and taught at Bloomfield Middle School before that.

Payton began his teaching career at Scottsburg Middle School as a seventh- and eighth-grade social studies teacher.

“I am excited to join the Bardstown School System as the middle school’s assistant principal,” Payton said in the release. “Bardstown City Schools has a tradition of excellence and I look forward to working with the great staff at the middle school. I am eager to get started helping the students of Bardstown Middle School grow to their fullest potential and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

Payton and his wife, Beth, live in Bardstown. The Payton’s have two children, Zayne and Emme, who attend Bardstown City Schools.
