With Derby just around the corner, Bardstown’s supply of talented community members is once again on display. Jimmy Gartland, manager of Gartland’s Art Sales in Bardstown, is the recipient of the 2018 Festival Unveiled Judge’s Award from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation for his framing of this year’s Festival poster.

“I was seriously shocked,” Gartland said of the win, adding when he heard the news he was texting his dad, who had been anticipating the results.

This is the first year his business was invited to take part in the competition, so the win was a pleasant surprise. More than a dozen shops submitted frame designs to display the 2018 poster designed by sisters Jeaneen Barnhart and Doreen Barnhart DeHart.

Gartland’s entry was double-matted using two different Larson-Juhl frames and a custom border selected to complement the colors within the poster.

“It’s flow matted, and looks like a shadow box,” Gartland said.

Gartland’s Art Sales has been in business since 1974 and was started by Gartland’s parents, Keith and Cathy Gartland, in a garage. The business offers custom framing for artwork and photography done in-house and can frame cherished items such as wedding dresses, sports memorabilia, quilts and more.

Gartland’s is at 105 W. Flaget Avenue in Bardstown. Visit www.gartlandsartsales.com for more information.

In addition to managing the store, Jimmy Gartland, a Bardstown native, graduate of Bardstown High School and advocate for supporting local businesses, also serves on the Board of Directors for the Bardstown Main Street Program.
