A former substitute teacher faces sex abuse charges after a late August arrest.

Charles L. Dickerson Jr., 73, is scheduled to appear in Nelson Circuit Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. Dickerson was arrested Aug. 28 and arraigned a few days later on a charge of first-degree sexual abuse (victim under 12 years of age), according to court records.

According to a uniform citation completed by the Bardstown Police Department, a complaint was made to Child Protective Services on Aug. 25. An unnamed guardian of the victim told police that three weeks prior, the victim and Dickerson had been seen positioned in a way that made the witness uncomfortable, but they didn’t see anything sexual. However, when Dickerson came to the door, the guardian told police, he had an erection.

The victim, according to the report, told police that he had seen Dickerson naked several times and that Dickerson had fondled him. The report also stated that Dickerson had taken the victim’s shirt off and that the boy saw Dickerson fondling himself.

According to a personnel file obtained through an open records request, Dickerson had been employed as a temporary substitute teacher with Bardstown City Schools from 2009-2014. From 2000-2009, Dickerson served as a regular substitute.

Chief Operating Officer  for the City Schools, Joey Downs, said there were no complaints lodged against Dickerson during that time, and no complaints were shown in his personnel file from that district.

On Dickerson’s resume, also found in the personnel file, he is listed as having taught as a religion instructor at Bethlehem High School from 1973-1995. During those years, Dickerson reports he had also served as a vice principal from 1978-1992.

From 1966-1968 he is listed as having served as an elementary school teacher for grades fourth and sixth at St. Joseph School.

The Kentucky Court of Justice shows Dickerson’s criminal history to include a traffic offense in 2014 for failure to wear seat belts. No other criminal cases are listed.
