DUI crash injures juvenile

A child was flown to Kosair Children’s Hospital Tuesday night following an injury accident in which the boy’s father is accused of driving under the influence.

Just before 7 p.m., Nelson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident in the 5900 block of Howardstown Road.

According Sgt. Mike Clark of the Sheriff’s Office, a vehicle driven by John T. Burba, 33, of New Hope, had left the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.

Burba suffered only minor visible injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Burba’s young son, John T. Burba, Jr., a passenger in the vehicle, was injured treated by Nelson County EMS at the scene then flown by Air Methods to Kosair’s.

Burba was arrested at the scene and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence and first-degree assault. He was lodged in the Nelson County Jail.

Sgt. Clark was unable to comment further on the accident or the child’s condition.

According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, Rollin Fork and New Hope fire departments also responded to the scene.

The investigation is continuing and those with information are asked to contact the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.
