Driver flown to hospital after crash

A car crash victim who was severely injured in an accident on Balltown Road early Monday morning was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital by medical helicopter.

According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Rhonda R. Thomas, of Raywick, was driving a Volkswagen two-door sedan in the 3100 section of Balltown Road just before 6 a.m. when she swerved to avoid a deer, slid off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Firefighters from the New Hope Fire Department and Nelson County Fire and Rescue responded to extricate the woman from the car.

Nelson County EMS then drove the woman to the Nelson County Fairgrounds, where Air Methods met the ambulance crew and transported the patient to U of L.

The woman suffered severe leg injuries.
