Firefighters for the Bardstown-Nelson County Volunteer Fire Department will be getting new hand-held digital radios, and all of the trucks also will be equipped with digital communications.

Stacy Faulkner, chairman, said the board approved the purchases at a special called meeting Thursday to discuss plans for separating from the City of Bardstown Fire Department effective June 30, the date the contract was to expire.

Faulkner said the 45 portable radios and truck radios together will cost about $18,000.
