Bernheim hosting Festival of Trees, Holiday Open House

-A A +A

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is hosting two holiday events this weekend.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, a Holiday Open House will be held at the Visitor Center to kick off the holiday season with shopping, gift drawings, holiday specials, music and refreshments. The Open House will feature local artisans who will display unique gifts available for purchase, and the forest gift shop offers a variety of items for nature lovers as well. Families are also invited to do an on-your-own challenge Saturday from 9 to 4:30 by transforming nuts, pine cones and other natural materials into holiday ornaments.

Also on Saturday, the forest will kick off its Festival of Trees, which will run until Dec. 10. Guests will be invited to see how Bernheim staff and volunteers incorporate the forest in decorating ten trees. The trees will also reflect different charities and guests will have the chance to donate to corresponding charities at the event. During the festival Isaac’s Café, located inside the Visitor Center, will open early to serve hot chocolate, cider, coffee and cookies.

Bernheim has several other events taking place in December as well, including “The Gifts of Attention” presentation with Wren Smith at My Old Kentucky Home from 6-9 Dec. 8 and Dec. 15. The event is free and will focus on faeries and being attentive to the natural world. The event will also be held in conjunction with My Old Kentucky Home’s performance of “A Christmas Carol,” for which tickets can be purchased at www.MOKHshop.com.

On Dec. 16, a Hot Chocolate Hike will be held at Bernheim from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and from Dec. 26 through Jan 31, the forest will collect unwanted Christmas trees to turn into mulch that will be used in the arboretum. Find a full list of events online at Bernheim.org. The forest will be closed on Christmas Day.
