A 31-year-old Bardstown man, Joseph Simpson, and another driver were killed in a fiery head-on collision in southern Indiana Sunday night.

According to a press release from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office in New Albany, the crash happened about 8:38 p.m. in the 3000 block of State Road 111 South.

The press release said Schuyler Benjamin, 27, of Indianapolis, was driving north in a white 2002 Ford explorer and crossed the center line, striking a silver 2002 Toyota pickup driven by Simpson head on.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined that Benjamin was passing improperly in a no-passing zone at the time of the collision.

According to Louisville television station WDRB, both vehicles burst into flames after impact.

It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but toxicology reports are being done.
