A Bardstown man, Richard Wickliffe, was pronounced dead Friday morning at Flaget Memorial Hospital after a car accident on Bloomfield Road, but it isn’t yet known whether he died of injuries from the crash or of a health problem.

The accident occurred in the 500 block of Bloomfield Road.

Dispatch notified Bardstown Police at 9:23 a.m.

Deputy Coroner Brian Papenfuss couldn’t say what the cause of death was when he was on his way with the body to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville for an autopsy Friday afternoon.

Officer Jason Woodson of the Bardstown Police said the investigation is “ongoing.”

“We don’t know,” Woodson said when asked whether Wickliffe was killed in the accident.

He said Wickliffe was driving the car when it went off the road, hit a concrete structure that’s part of a sewer and went into a creek.

No one else was in the car with him.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor, Woodson said.

Wickliffe, of Bardstown, was the father of Rasheed Javon Wickliffe, 18, who died in December 2015 after being stabbed in the neck. Alexander Cole Roberts, the man accused of the teen’s murder, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter by a jury in July 2017.
