  • 5th REGION GIRLS' SOCCER...

Three straight, 31 in a row.

Bethlehem reasserted its ownership of the 5th Region girls’ soccer landscape Thursday, turning back Bardstown for the fourth time this season, 1-0, to capture a third straight trip to the state tournament.

If you asked Banshees’ coach Danny Rossoll five years ago if he envisioned this possibility, he might have laughed at you.

  • 5th REGION VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT...

Bardstown will make its second-ever trip to the 5th Region tournament this week, opening play Tuesday against the same team the Tigers beat in last year’s first round on the way to a surprising region runner-up finish.

Elizabethtown (28-9) is the opponent for the Tigers (27-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson County High School, one of just three teams to beat Bardstown all season long. The 17th District runner-up Panthers got a 3-1 win at home over the Tigers on Aug. 22. Bardstown took a four-set win from Elizabethtown in last year’s region quarterfinals.

Coming on the heels of a tough district road loss to Campbellsville, Bethlehem was able to right the ship and lock up the two seed for the playoffs with a 42-24 home victory over Fort Knox Friday night.

Bethlehem (3-6) coach Jesse Cantrall was pleased with the way his team handled the game.

  • FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Class 3A...

Despite district games finishing up Friday, things are still not settled for the playoff berths in Class 3A District 3, as Henry County, Thomas Nelson and Bardstown ended up in a three-way tie for the final two seeds.

The Wildcats, Generals and Tigers all completed district play with a 1-3 record, with Bardstown (3-6) beating Thomas Nelson (2-7) head-to-head, and the Generals won over Henry County (4-5), who beat the Tigers.

  • 19th DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL...

The glass ceiling has finally been shattered.

Bardstown captured its first-ever district volleyball championship with an impressive 3-1 win (25-11, 25-19, 20-25, 25-8) over Washington County on Wednesday in the Tigers’ own gymnasium.

They did it in stunning fashion, scoring the final 19 points of the fourth set as the home crowd yelled their approval.

Senior Maggie Downs served the final 18 points.

  • 5th REGION BOYS' SOCCER...

ELIZABETHTOWN — The first trip to the 5th Region boys’ soccer tournament for Bethlehem and Nelson County since 2014 ended in Wednesday night’s semifinals, both by shutout at the hands of a 17th District rival.

Nelson County (12-7-1) was up first, facing off with a Central Hardin team that had scored a 5-0 win over the Cardinals just two weeks ago during the regular season. The Bruins (14-7-1) went one better this time, eliminating the Cardinals from the postseason by a 6-0 count.

  • 5th REGION GIRLS' SOCCER...

Despite dominating possession and shot attempts the entire game, Bardstown still found itself down 1-0 to Elizabethtown and facing elimination as the second half wore on.

But eventually, some of those shot chances had to find the net. And they did, with senior Haylee Koger netting the equalizer in the 59th minute, and junior Molly Bodkin coming up with the game-winner with just 1:25 showing on the clock, a thrilling ending to a comeback 2-1 decision that put Bardstown into the 5th Region championship match for the first time since 2012.

It’s been a long time since Bethlehem lost to a 5th Region opponent, and thanks to a pair of goals from junior Madie Sparks to beat Central Hardin in Tuesday’s region semifinals, that streak lasts at least two more days.

  • 19th DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL...

Bethlehem’s six-year reign as volleyball champions of the 19th District has come to an end.

The Banshees fell to Washington County last night in the tournament semifinals (25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 9-15), losing a 2-1 lead in the process.

The loss also means Bethlehem will not advance to the regional tournament for the first time since 2008. Ironically, Washington County also played the role of spoiler that year when they beat the Banshees in the opening round of the district tournament.
