  • PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Walls stars...

Nelson County standout basketball player Marly Walls got a chance over the weekend to add to her extensive trophy case when the guard was voted Most Valuable Player for her West squad in Saturday’s Dawahare’s/KABC All-Star Game at Transylvania University.

Walls tallied 18 points, four rebounds and four assists to lead the West team, which fell short, 114-100, to the East squad. The East team was led by Mercer County’s Emma Davis, who scored a game-high 20.

  • GIRLS' SOCCER: Tigers’...

A few years ago, Andrea Hayden didn’t really dream that playing soccer beyond high school was something she would have the chance to do.

But over the past two seasons, especially her senior year, her coach says the Bardstown stalwart grew and matured so much as a player that doors opened for her.

Usually players make their greatest improvements at earlier ages, Bardstown girls’ soccer coach Martin Bodkin said, perhaps between their eighth-grade and freshman year, or freshman and sophomore year. Hayden was different, he said.

  • PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Eagles...

Bethlehem has the early control in the 19th District baseball seeding race thanks to the Eagles’ three-game sweep this week of Thomas Nelson.

That puts Bethlehem at 3-0 in the standings, with Washington County right behind at 4-1. The Eagles are 7-4 so far on the season, while Thomas Nelson drops to 0-4 in district games and 1-5 overall.

On Friday at Thomas Nelson, Bethlehem got to Generals pitching for 16 hits and was able to pull away from a 5-3 margin after three innings to go on to a 14-3 victory.

  • On the record with: Bardstown...

Bardstown senior Drew Mason is this week’s nominee for The Kentucky Standard/PLG-TV 13 Student-Athlete of the Week.

Drew is a standout track athlete at Bardstown, excelling in the hurdles and anchoring the Tigers’ sprint relay squads. He was also a key leader for the Bardstown football team, and played basketball up until this past season.

Kentucky Standard sports editor Peter W. Zubaty had a few questions for Drew to better get to know him.

  • PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Banshees...

After a rocky start to the season, Bethlehem softball is turning the corner, winning three straight to shake off an 0-7 start.

The latest victim was Washington County Wednesday in Springfield, a 14-7 Bethlehem victory that saw the Banshees connect for 15 hits, scoring in each of the seven innings. The Banshees (3-7, 1-0 dist.) built a 7-0 lead on the Commanders (1-7, 0-1), then weathered a five-run inning before pulling away.

  • STRAIGHT ARROW: The spring youth...

The 2018 season opened Saturday, and my granddaughter, Hannah, had been anxiously looking forward to her third turkey season. So regardless of the snowstorm in the forecast, Eric and I planned to take her to Hart County for opening morning.

I was up at 5 a.m. Saturday, and my truck was covered in snow. Hannah and Eric arrived 20 minutes later, and we loaded a chainsaw and fuel, oil and tools in Eric’s truck in case we had any trees down from last week’s storms. We were on the road by 5:30.
