    The Strikers, a U12 girls team, played Larue County Saturday, falling 3-1. The Strikers’ lone goal came from Victoria Riggs. The Strikers next game is Saturday against Elizabethtown.

  • RIVER RAT: 'Baseball for Brodi' charity tourney a hit
    Sports aren’t always about overpaid, whiny athletes, slimy agents and greedy owners. Sometimes the sports world sheds light upon what’s really important in life. Dean Watts Park was the place to be this past weekend to see just that, as mass generosity was in effect at the “Baseball For Brodi” charity tournament, which brought in 37 teams — some from as far away as North Harrison, Ind., and Russell Springs — as well as hundreds and hundreds of fans, players and parents.

  • RINGSIDE SEAT: Rousey gets 'Rowdy' on Kaufmann in women's match
    Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey successfully defended her title on Saturday night, taking just less than a minute to submit former champion Sarah Kaufmann via an armbar. Rousey, the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist in judo, raised her record to 6-0, with all her wins coming in the first round and all coming from armbar submissions.

  • RINGSIDE SEAT: Smith stuns Damnjanovic
    Cruiserweight Toris “The Bull” Smith (3-32 3 KOs) scored the improbable TKO victory over local favorite, Mile Damnjanovic (1-1, 1 KO) Saturday night at the Expo 5 Events Center in Louisville. Future Promotions, headed up by former local fighter Dereco Murray brought Smith to town in what was meant to be a stepping stone for Damnjanovic, but the fighter from Memphis did not intend to be just another opponent for Damnjanovic to pad his resume against.

  • GOLF: Gumm rallies in Ky. Open final round
    Jeffrey Gumm rallied with a 2-under par 70 in Thursday’s championship round of the Kentucky Open, finishing out his tournament on a high note to post a 4-over par 220. Gumm, the club pro at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood, had a rough second round 79 after a 71 in Tuesday’s first round, but was able climb the leaderboard to place in an 8-way tie for 26th. Gumm banked $618.57 in prize winnings for his efforts.

  • GOLF: Gumm, Edelen make Ky. Open cut
    Bardstown golfers Jeffrey Gumm and Logan Edelen each made the cut (8-over par 152) into Thursday’s final round of the Kentucky Open at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron. Results from Thursday’s championship round were too late for this edition of The Kentucky Standard. Gumm, club pro at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood, posted a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday, and Edelen, who golfs for Western Kentucky University, shot an even par 72.

  • GOLF: Four local players in this week's Ky. Open
    Four local products will make a run at glory beginning with Tuesday’s Kentucky Open first round at the par-72, 7,103-yard Traditions Golf Club in Hebron. Round two continues on Wednesday, with qualifiers advancing to Thursday’s championship round. Bardstown pro Jeffrey Gumm gets things started for the local contingent with an 8:27 a.m. start time from the first tee. He’ll begin Wednesday on No. 10 at 1:12 p.m.
