    JOPLIN, Mo. — Led by All-America performances by Angela Musk and Emily Frith, the Bellarmine University women’s cross country team finished 19th at the NCAA National Championship Saturday on the course at Missouri Southern.  It was Bellarmine’s first appearance in the national championship.

  • COLLEGE SPORTS: Musk, Knights in NCAAs Saturday

    LOUISVILLE — The Bellarmine University women’s cross country team will run on the sport’s biggest stage this weekend as they make the program’s first appearance at the NCAA Championship in Joplin, Mo., on Saturday morning.

    The Knights earned their inaugural bid to the NCAAs by finishing fifth as a team at the Midwest Regional Championship in Kenosha, Wisc., two weeks ago. Saturday’s race will cover the 6K course at Missouri Southern State University with an 11:30 a.m. CST start time.

  • Mudd, Transy headed to NCAA DIII tourney

    Former Nelson County High School athlete Daniel Mudd is heading to the NCAA tourney.

    Mudd, a sophomore at Transylvania, will be in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when his Pioneers visit Wheaton College (15-3-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament.

    The Pioneers went 16-1-2 and were champions of the Heartland Conference.

    Transy is making its first NCAA appearance since 2010 and its seventh under head coach Brandon Bowman.

    KENOSHA, Wisc. — Behind All-Region performances by Angela Musk and Emily Frith, the Bellarmine University women’s cross country team placed fifth in Saturday’s NCAA Division II Midwest Regional to advance to the National Championship Finals for the first time in school history. 

    On the men’s side, Bellarmine’s young squad ran their best event of the season, finishing 14th, led by All-Region performer Robert Sandlin, Jr., who was 13th overall.

  • SCC ATHLETICS: Hofstraat shines in Pats' opener

    Lena Bramblett admitted to being a “little worried” at halftime of the Patriots’ season opener Friday at Martin Methodist. But the worry turned to joy as the St. Catharine women turned a 29-29 halftime deadlock into a 72-53 win.

    “Our point guards were in foul trouble early and we had an awkward lineup in much of the first half,” Bramblett said. “But we settled in and made some shots in the second half and our conditioning proved to be phenomenal.”

  • COLLEGE SPORTS: Musk on fire

    Former Bethlehem standout runner Angela Musk has gotten her senior cross country season for Bellarmine off to a smashing start.

    Going into last week’s National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame University, Musk was 2-for-2 on the season with wins in the recent Stegemoller Classic, as well as the Sept. 8 Midwest Open in Somers, Wisc. Musk covered the 5K course in 17:49.40, helping her squad to a fourth-place finish in the team competition.

  • ST. CATHARINE COLLEGE: Athletic department hosting golf scramble

    The inaugural St. Catharine College Athletics Golf Tournament is Oct. 13 at Maywood Golf Course in Bardstown. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

    “We are excited about hosting this tournament for the first time,” St. Catharine College athletic director Mike Doig said. “The money raised will be used for athletic projects on campus and for the further development of our overall athletic program.”

  • ST. CATHARINE COLLEGE: Key SCC fundraiser this weekend

    Saddle up pardner and ride on over to St. Catharine College Friday as the 22nd Annual St. Catharine College Charity Auction and Celebrity Golf Classic takes place this weekend.

    Friday’s charity auction will feature a western theme. Attendees are encouraged to wear western attire and prizes will be awarded for the best getup. The fun starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour and silent auctions in the Spalding Student and Community Center on the SCC Campus. Admission is free and the public is invited to stop by the watering hole to quench their thirst and eat some grub.

  • COLLEGE SPORTS: NC products try out for ECTC

    Two former Nelson County High School varsity players are among those filling out interest forms for Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s women’s soccer team recently, as 2012 graduate Chelsey Ritchie and ’11 grad Jordon Metcalf could make ECTC’s first team. Ritchie was a varsity midfielder all four years, and appeared in all 22 games as a senior, scoring one goal and assisting on two others. Metcalf, who attended Western Kentucky University out of high school, had two assists in 18 appearances as a senior.
