  • Don’t believe outrageous claims. Coupon circulars are full of weird products such as painted plates, knitted slippers, wildlife figures and “must-have” plants. This time of the year these circulars prey on our anticipation of spring. Giant tomatoes, one tree with five different fruits, and a tree that grows 3 feet in a week share space with $1 off coupons. Don’t believe the sensational claims of the plants that scam the most people: the giant tomato tree, the royal paulownia, the 5-in-1 fruit tree and bargain bulbs for dirt cheap.

  • It may not feel like it, but spring is right around the corner. That means daffodils will be blooming and robins will be chirping. It’s also the time for the annual Taste of Bardstown, the tasting that raises funds for Hospice of Nelson County and the Bardstown-Nelson County Hospitality Association. This year’s tasting is set for March 24. Once again, we could use basket donations from the community to help raise funds for terminally ill Hospice patients.

  • Preventative care is the buzz word when it comes to our health. Why not the health of our trees, too? After the Tuesday storms of late January and early February many homeowners may be blaming some of their trees for their woes. A smashed car or roof and the cost incurred cleaning up a fallen tree are unpleasant. Consider this: Perhaps the expense of cabling a tree or thinning out its crown would have been worth it after all, if it would have helped the tree withstand the storm?

  • Birds can be great fun to watch, but they also provide the gardener with some valuable services, such as eating pest insects and spreading seeds. Their songs are typically musical and pleasant.

Some may argue, however, that the nuisance of pecking summer tomatoes or stealing berries outweighs the bonuses. I think we need to balance the pros and cons of everything.
