The struggle to stand out

Roger Smith remembers the daunting feeling of re-entering the workforce after he was let go from his manufacturing job.

“At that time, you just have to figure out what to do next,” the Bardstown resident said.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Smith began attending job fairs. But he hit several speed bumps.

“Everybody was asking for the same thing,” Smith said.

Even with his past experience, Smith was turned away from potential employers because he didn’t have a minimum of a two-year college degree.
