In the Kitchen

  • Making dinner time, family time

I can’t tell you how passionately I feel about families sitting down and eating together. Nothing is quite as satisfying and fulfilling as preparing a nutritious meal for your loved ones and sitting around the table together to enjoy it as a family unit.

I don’t care if it’s fruit and yogurt for breakfast or roast chicken for supper, as long as you make an effort to sit down and eat as many meals as you can together. It’s a perfect way to connect with one another, and it provides a feeling of comfort and security for your children.

  • True or false-a: I love salsa?

True! True! Do you have a jar of America’s most popular condiment in your fridge? I know I do! No, I’m not talking ketchup (can you say high fructose corn syrup?) and I’m not talking mayonnaise. I’m talking about salsa!

According to some sales surveys, salsa is indeed America’s favorite condiment. I have a question for you, though. What’s in your salsa? Is it tomatoes and onions alone? Because, oh, salsa can be so much more!

  • Harness the power of different kinds of flour

Now, y’all know I don’t think baked goods are terribly necessary for anyone to be eating (I’ve said it before, that none of us needs another muffin!), but there are times when you do need to use flour. By now, all of us know that white flour isn’t an optimal choice for good health, but with so many options on the shelves, which one do you choose? And when?

    First thing first.

Let’s talk about a flour of which all of us are familiar — wheat flour.

  • How to brew the perfect cup of coffee

    StatePoint

It’s not magic. Brewing the perfect cup of coffee can take place in your own kitchen!

As with any recipe, fresh, high-quality ingredients matter.

    Start with fresh, cold water.

If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, use filtered water for better flavor.

Remember, grinding coffee in advance of brewing means loss of flavor.

So invest in a coffee grinder for a fresher brew.

  • Satisfying chili for everyone

    BY LEANNE ELY

    THE DINNER DIVA

There is something extremely satisfying about making a big pot of chili for your family on a cool day.

I find it as enjoyable to make chili for dinner as I do sitting down and eating that chili.

There’s just something about putting all those simple ingredients of vegetables and spices together, in a combination you know your family will enjoy, and sitting down and eating it together.

  • Dinner Diva: We can only do what we can do!

Over the past couple of months, I’ve warned you of arsenic in your rice, pesticides on your apples, BPA in your plastic, and human hair as a bread preservative (among other shocking topics). It’s recently been brought to my attention that some folks are starting to feel discouraged after reading my blog posts containing this information and I want to know that this has never been my intention.

  • Hakuna Frittata: Eggs to the rescue

Forget about Hakuna Matata — meaning “no worries!” I say when it comes to the kitchen, it’s more like Hakuna Frittata! Eggs make their way to my dinner table on a regular basis.

  • Thinking outside the lunch box

Today’s Dinner Diva article isn’t about our evening meal, but it’s an important topic to cover just the same; I hope you’ll agree!

I’m talking lunch today, and specifically, lunch boxes.

My kids are beyond the “but Mawwwmmmm, everyone else has [insert your child’s most desired petroleum-by-product-based poison of choice here] why can’t I?” (Thank goodness!)

  • Quit stressing over dressing

All of you know by now that I’m a big fan of salads. If you read any number of my articles and if you cook from my books, you also know that I am not a big fan of commercial salad dressings.

So what’s a Dinner Diva to do?

Well, you can hardly eat a pile of green leaves on its own. I’m all for healthy eating and getting in those veggies, but all of us have our limits!
