A Cox’s Creek area woman is dead after her car hit a tree on Samuels Loop Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department, Wendy Jean Kilgour, 50, was traveling south in a red 2007 SAAB when she dropped off the side of the road, overcorrected, then struck a tree. The vehicle spun around, crossed over the road again and came to a rest in the southbound ditch.

The accident occurred approximately 8:25 a.m. March 9 around the 900 block of Samuels Loop in Cox’s Creek.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Department, Nelson County EMS and the Bardstown-Nelson County Fire Department responded to the wreck. Kilgour was pronounced dead at the scene by the Nelson County Coroner’s Office.

Kilgour was not wearing a seat belt.

“It does appear that speed was a factor in the accident,” Sheriff Stephen Campbell said. The press release also cites wet roadways as a possible contributor to the accident.

The investigation is also pending a toxicology report from the Louisville Medical Examiner’s Office.

Kilgour’s husband, Jeff Kilgour, is with the U.S. Army Reserve Bardstown Unit, stationed in Afghanistan, according to the Nelson County Coroner’s Office.
