Demetrius Watkins, 34, and Claude Owen McMakin, 23, both of Bloomfield, were indicted in Nelson Circuit Court Wednesday on charges of first-degree robbery and complicity to first-degree robbery. Watkins faced an additional first-degree persistent felony offender charge after being previously convicted of second-degree robbery, theft by unlawful taking, first-degree wanton endangerment and a number of other charges.

“The robbery appeared to be a home invasion type robbery. One of the suspects fled, the other one was detained by the homeowner and associates,” Nelson County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jason Allison said.

McMakin was allegedly on the scene when deputies arrived, and was treated at the hospital before being taken to jail, Allison said.

It was unclear as of press time how many people were present during the alleged robbery and how they managed to detain McMakin.

Watkins’ bail was set at $100,000 cash only, plus conditions, while McMakin’s bail was $50,000 cash only, plus conditions. Arraignment was scheduled for March 8.

The indictment of a person by a grand jury or otherwise is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
