Nelson County swimmer Lauren Jones is this week’s nominee for The Kentucky Standard/PLG-TV 13 Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Cardinals’ senior co-captain, Jones is active in FFA and 4-H, and is an avid horseback rider. She plans to attend Western Kentucky University in the fall and study communications.
Kentucky Standard sports editor Peter W. Zubaty caught up with Jones for a few questions to better get to know her.
PZ: What’s your favorite TV show?
LJ: I don’t have a favorite show, but reality TV is my drug. I will watch all reality TV.
PZ: What got you started in swimming?
LJ: One of my friends was joining, and convinced me to join as well. I’m really glad she did, because I’ve gone pretty far with it.
PZ: Do you have a favorite pre-meet meal?
LJ: Not really, but as a team, we always go out to eat after a meet. It’s a tradition.
PZ: What’s your favorite song/album? Who’s your favorite band/artist?
LJ: Music is a big part of me, but I don’t have a particular favorite song. I really like anything acoustic!
PZ: What do you enjoy most about swimming?
LJ: I enjoy how it feels to practice hard and then dominating a swim meet.
PZ: What does it mean to you to be a leader for your team?
LJ: It means that you can’t just focus on yourself and your success. You have people depending on you to help them. Much of the kids on our team were younger so I almost had to teach them everything. You have to be a good role model and give the kids someone to look up to.
PZ: How tough is it juggling schoolwork, sports and other activities?
LJ: It really is hard. During swim season I struggle to keep up with everything. I’m glad I have my co-captain Bailey Shewmaker to help me!
PZ: What has been your biggest thrill in swimming?
LJ: Seeing all of the younger kids do well is what thrills me the most.
PZ: What do you do when you have some precious free time away from school and sports?
LJ: SLEEP. Just relaxing makes everything less stressful.
