To the editor:
For more than 25 years, I made my living in advertising. A good ad can entice you to buy anything. The more money you have to get that ad out the more people will buy what you are selling (remember Pet Rocks?). Politicians have discovered this. No matter how outrageous the claim, no matter how unqualified the candidate, with the right message and enough money spent you will get elected. One of the most glaring examples (there are many) was the recent editorial by David Floyd. He is attempting to send the message that we need to “tighten our belts” and fight Governor Beshear’s plans to provide pre-school for all Kentucky’s children. All the while saying we don’t need to raise taxes. As for casino gambling? No way! That would just be foolishness. Never mind that we have had gambling at our horse tracks for years, never mind the money the lottery provides for college students. Forget about the Kentucky money that travels across the bridge to the Indiana casinos. We need to buck up and remember our values! Make educating our children a priority? That’s that liberal agenda. What’s next? Make sure none of our children go to bed hungry? Yet again and again we “buy” it.
If you want to move Kentucky and our country forward, if you want an end to Super-Paks and money buying our elected officials then the answer is simple.
Stop voting the way you buy toothpaste. Stop falling for self-interest dressed as patriotism. Think before you vote and vote for what is best for the people of Kentucky and our nation.
