Now that Bardstown will have new leadership starting in 2011, do you think the smoking ordinance should come up for another vote?

smoking ban

The smoking ban is not fair to smokers. Each business owner should have the right to decide if they want a smoking area in there business. There are smoking filters that can be istalled if the place of business chooses to do so. I choose to smoke and that is my right to do so.

Sure there are a lot of

Sure there are a lot of debates around the smoking ban and although I am not a smoker I believe that smokers are strongly discriminated in our current society and that's now fair. I used to be a smoker but I quit years ago with the help of one of the San Diego drug rehab centers, it was my decision, I had my reasons, the state should have nothing to do with that. I agree smoking causes health risks for the non-smokers that can't avoid the smoke but I think the fair thing to do is to create separate places for the smokers so those risks are nullified.

Smoking ban

A smoking ban is an intrusion into the privacy of the citizens of Nelson County. As an owner of commercial property, I do not allow smoking inside of the building, BUT, this is my decision. If a majority of my clientele were smokers and I determined it was in my best interest to allow smoking, the decision should be up to me. Citizens, the customers, will dictate whether they want to patronize establishments that allow smoking or not. Government intrusion is not the answer.

Some exemptions make perfect sense

Few people realize that the smoking ordinance actually prevented an upscale cigar & bourbon lounge from opening in downtown Bardstown. Why should an entrepreneur be prevented from opening a private business that enhances the Bourbon Trail experience and creates some diversity among downtown retailers? Non-smokers and children would NEVER be subjected to second-hand smoke because they would never patronize an establishment of that nature. ADULTS that CHOOSE to enjoy a fine cigar and a taste of bourbon would have the freedom to do so.

The ordinance could have easily been written in a way that allowed that freedom while still protecting the health of the general public. Dozens of cities have done so in a way that doesn't discourage private business owners from operating a legal business.

Duh

Absolutely not! Once an ordinance passes you're outta smoke! Thank you council for a healthy environment for my children and little babies who have the right to be in any public facility, thank you for the fresh smell of my clothes when I return home. Public means equality for all. Smokers open your own "private facility" but when you cater to the public, follow the rules!

Absolutly. What is wrong with choice? Let the business choose if they will allow smoking & let the consumer choose if they want to patronize that business.

cough cough

Is that cough from distilleries, auto exhaust, farm machinery or what?

In the last Kentucky Standard

In the last Kentucky Standard poll, 62 percent of respondents said they supported the smoking ban, especially after the recent indoor air quality study. It's looking like a majority of Nelson County residents aren't seeking any repeal...
