Nelson County Sheriff Ed Mattingly warned residents of the Cox’s Creek area Monday to empty their mailboxes promptly and watch for mail thieves.

“It appears that the person or persons opened some of the mail and then threw the letters out along Louisville Road,” Mattingly said in a media release.

“We are requesting that residents be vigilant, empty your box promptly, and if you see anything contact Nelson County Dispatch at 348-3211,” he said. “Any questions regarding the mail can be directed to Jackie Drake at the U. S. Post Office in Cox’s Creek 502-348-5590.

Mattingly said the post office and the postal inspector are aware of the issue. Stealing mail is a federal crime and a felony punishable by fines and imprisonment up to five years.
