Gov. Steve Beshear signed a new bill last Monday that would force metal recyclers to keep track of their purchases.
House Bill 390, sponsored by Rep. Tanya Pullin, is intended to prevent the purchase of stolen metals, such as copper, brass, aluminum, bronze, lead or zinc.
According to Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin, the issue of stolen scrap metal and copper has become “a major category of theft” in Bardstown.
“It’s a very bad problem,” he said.
