According to a press release from the Bardstown Police Department, Officer Tom Blair observed a black 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe with heavy front end damage turn right from Bloomfield Road onto John Rowan Boulevard at around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The vehicle also had a flat tire and sparks coming from the rim. While conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle, Blair identified Charles T. Poynter, 32, as the driver. Detecting an odor of alcohol on Poynter, Blair detained the man pending further investigation.

He was then approached by a passing motorist who reported that Poynter’s vehicle had been involved in a collision with several other vehicles moments before.

At that time, the accident was being dispatched to BPD, Nelson County EMS and Bardstown Fire Department, according to the release.

The investigation revealed that Poynter had struck several vehicles, requiring one person to be transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital.

Poynter was lodged in the Nelson County Jail and charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, not wearing a seat belt, and not having a license.

Officers are still investigating the incident and ask that anyone with information contact the BPD at (502) 348-6811 or Nelson County Dispatch at (502) 348-3211.

Poynter has a criminal history in Nelson County involving drug and assault charges. He was also indicted in 2011 for wanton endangerment after allegedly shooting at and damaging a vehicle.
