To the editor:
Given this month’s spirit of independence, we invite you to “Celebrate Independents” and the advantages of shopping local businesses.
Research has shown how shopping small businesses often benefits communities. A 2003 study by Civic Economics found that out of every $100 spent at a locally owned and operated business, about $45 stayed in the local economy. In addition, local independent businesses often contribute to the economy by hiring local staff and using local suppliers, and boosting local tax income via revenue.
