An off-duty Mt. Washington police officer helped capture a shoplifter Saturday after the man used force on loss prevention staff at Wal-Mart.

According to Bardstown Police Captain Tom Roby, Thomas Andrew Myers, 31, of Culloden, W. Va ., was arrested Saturday when he allegedly tried to shoplift from Wal-Mart. When confronted by the store’s loss prevention staff, Roby said, Myers fought with them, pushed the loss prevention officer and from the store toward Lowe’s on East John Rowan Boulevard.

Roby said Myers was stopped by an off-duty Mt. Washington police officer, who detained him until Bardstown Police arrived to take him into custody. Myers was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault. Roby noted that anytime force is used involving a theft, the crime is considered a robbery.
