Don't be a turkey, give blood ... Save a life in Nelson County

In 2005, U.S. farmers raised 256 million turkeys. That’s a lot of turkeys! Anyone who enjoys one of these birds on Thanksgiving is grateful they are available.

But did you know that this year it was estimated that only 111 million people are eligible to donate blood? That’s just more than 37 percent of the U.S. population. Of those, only about 5 percent of Americans who are eligible to donate blood actually do. Just think what would happen if there wasn’t enough blood for patients in need?

Don’t be a turkey! This Thanksgiving give thanks by giving blood. Each blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives.

Your chance to help save a life and give blood is at one of the following American Red Cross blood drives:

•10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at Town Country Bank, 201 N. Third St., Bardstown. All presenting donors at this blood drive will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of three $250 shopping sprees.

•10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at St. Joseph Church, 310 W. Stephen Foster Ave., Bardstown. All presenting donors at this blood drive will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of three $250 shopping sprees.

•9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at New Haven Rolling Fork Fire Department, 362 Center Street, New Haven. All presenting donors at this blood drive will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of three $250 shopping sprees.

If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present positive identification. For more information or to schedule your blood donation appointment, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543.
