Darby is my name, couponing is my game

For the next 13 weeks The Kentucky Standard is teaming up with coupon guru Darby Dugan to bring readers tips and tricks to get the most for your money.

Allow me to introduce myself, if you will. My name is Darby Dugan, aka, The Coupon Goddess, a moniker bestowed upon me by one of my friends after seeing the many postings that I put on Facebook of my coupon savings.

I’ve been seriously couponing since 2008. Like many, I would casually glance through the coupon inserts in the Sunday paper and then put them in the recycle bin. One day and one sign in a grocery store window changed all that, however. I was idling at a red light and happened to look at a sign in the store window that advertised Peter Pan Peanut Butter on sale for $1.  I knew that I had recently seen a coupon for that product for $1 off. When I got home, I clipped it from the insert and the next day I went in and got a jar of Peter Pan for free. Wow,

Free Food! How cool was that? I began to look at coupons in an entirely different light and proceeded to educate myself all about them. What I learned was fascinating and began to spread the word to friends and family. At first, they were amused by my excitement and humored me by listening to my exploits and my savings, but that was it. No one jumped on the coupon band wagon train, until …

My sister, whom I had been trying to convince to use coupons, spent the weekend with me. At the end of the first evening, I looked at her and said ‘You know, I woke up this morning and brushed my teeth with free toothpaste, drank free coffee, ate a bowl of cereal from a box that cost 65 cents. I took a shower and shampooed my hair with free shampoo, conditioned my hair with free conditioner. I used free body bash, shaved using a free razor and free shave gel. I then applied free body lotion and free deodorant. I went into town to run some errands and while in town, I went to a sandwich shop where I had a coupon for a free sub and redeemed it. I then enjoyed my sandwich with a free bottle of sports drink’.

My sister just looked at me. I said ‘This is what I do’ …

Suffice it to say that my sister is also now a Coupon Goddess.

I am not an Extreme Couponer, let me make that perfectly clear. I do, however, extremely enjoy couponing. I have saved thousands of dollars since I have started to coupon and I am passionate about teaching others how they, too, with very little effort, can save a ton of money.

An added benefit of being a couponer, I have found, is that it affects almost every aspect of your life when it comes to spending — or rather, saving — money. It’s our money, and I want to keep as much of it in our pockets as we can without sacrificing the quality of our lives. Indeed, everything I have learned has enriched our lives and I love sharing that knowledge with others.

Are you ready to learn?
