THE MURRAY STATE NEWS
PADUCAH — A Bardstown Murray State University student fell to his death and was found outside the Price Doyle Fine Arts Center on the school’s campus, around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Murray State Police confirmed that Jacob Derting, 21, died at the scene. He was a junior at the university. Initial investigation by the Murray State Police and the Calloway County Coroner’s office indicates the incident is a suicide.
The Murray State Police and emergency management services responded and cordoned off the area from students in front of Waterfield Library.
The area blocked off leads to the Zen Garden where Derting’s body was found.
After the incident, classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day.
“We are a tight knit campus family and this impacts us all,” University President Randy Dunn said. “I encourage students, faculty and staff to utilize the campus resources available. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
