The ‘Christ’ in Christmas

-A A +A

U.S. survey shows decline in religious observation of holiday

By Kacie Goode

As the children ran around and played games, there were holiday treats, candy canes and even a few Christmas trees at Bardstown Baptist Church, but Santa Claus wasn’t there. Instead, the kids each grabbed a candle, gathered around a small cake depicting a Nativity scene, and sang “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. While train rides to the “North Pole” and sitting on Santa’s knee remain a big holiday draw for many, others are working to preserve the religiously centered experiences of Christmas, which researchers believe are fading in the U.S.
